Women On Board Surf Festival 2002

Sept 28, 2002 - Ocean Beach, San Francisco

Great weather, beautiful waves and good vibes surrounded the festival, which started on Ocean Beach with a yoga class held by Ammy Naff. The buzz started to generate as the heats for the "Just for Fun" surf contest were drawn up.

Over 200 women, men, and children came out to Ocean Beach on September 28 to participate in Women On Board Surf Festival 2002.

Women donned colorful rashguards over their wetsuits and men put on dresses and bikini tops for the "men in drag" heat. All ranges, abilities and ages were represented in the water. The most experienced surfer had been surfing for 40 years and the youngest contestant was eight years old!

After the contest, Beth Price taught an on-land Surf Clinic. The party then moved up Noriega Street to SF Surf Shop. The crowd enjoyed a delicious barbeque prepared by Slide4less while the Mermen and DJ Matt Dong kept the vibe going with driving surf rock and cool record spins.

The surf contest and raffle winners were then announced. Congratulations to Josh, the winner of the grand prize custom board from SF Surfshop.

Thanks to Women On Board From....

STOKED! That's what my daughter Kelly is after her being awarded the Blue Crush Award at the contest last Sat. The attention she received from the older female surfers has really put some fire into her stoke.

I'm so glad I clicked on your link on the Surfpulse website! Whoever made the Blue Crush Award (the yellow star/nightlight) did such a cool thing by making it. What a great idea! Kelly took it to school on Mon. for show-and-tell, and jaws dropped at the sight of the award and her explanation of her experience.

Keep us informed of future events.

Thanks Again,
Steve Dwyer

Aloha, Annadel & the whole Crew!

Just a quick note to thank you for the tremendous job with the 2002 Surf Festival. The caring, hugs, hoots, encouragement and comraderie was beyond belief & I really didn't realize how important that is in our sport til I experienced it! Northern Cali surfers are supposed to be hard-core and tough as nails....well really its a lot more fun to be a little soft and cuddly! I got stuck in the rip with another girl and we helped each other out.

The yoga on the beach with Amy was sooo good, lying in the sand looking up at the clouds overhead. And Beth (with stitches in her head) gave us good fitness and training guidelines. It was great that they won, as they are both super role models and reminded us that we make ourselves strong.

My little star lamp is in my front window overlooking the lights of San Francisco across the Bay and I tell you I will never look at the City view again without a warm smile for all the aloha.

Thanks a million! OXO,
NJ Travis (fang)
