September 11th is a day for remembrance and respect, but also
a day for a positive community event.The NorCal Women's Surf Fest
is a celebration of women's surfing in Northern California. We
seek to create a fun day at the beach for new and experienced
surfers, together with their friends and family. Put on a smile,
share the stoke and have some good competitive fun!

CONTEST RULES
Please review the COMPLETE
RULES prior to entering, if you are new to competing.
WAVE COUNT
(subject to conditions; confirm at check-in). Maximum wave count
is 6 waves. Top 4 highest scoring waves will be counted.
JUDGING will be on a 10-point system with half
points. Competitors will be judged on style, wave selection,
length of ride and controlled functional maneuvers. Shuffling,
hopping back and forth and flapping on the surfboard will be
considered poor style and will not be scored as high as walking
or stylish radical maneuvers.
NOVICE ELIGIBILITY
Novice surfers must be able to catch a wave, stand up, and ride
the wave for some distance. Novices may be able to turn a bit
and typically falls off during or at the end of the wave. If
you can do multiple cutbacks, walk the nose, drop-knee turns,
or floaters, you are NOT a novice. If the judges deem that you
do not belong in the Novice Division, you will not receive a
score.
BOARD SIZES
Longboards are at least 9’0 or 3 ft over a kid contestant’s
head.
Shortboards are 2 ft or less over contestant’s head.
Funboards are 7’0 -8’0 hybrids.

9/10, 6pm. NOTE: Heats are still subject to
change on 9/11, so please regularly check heat postings + PA
announcements and with the check-in tent during the contest
day for prelims and your advancement to the semi-final &
final heats!

Surf contest fees includes goody bag and one awards dinner ticket
per contestant. For groms, there is one extra ticket for parent/guardian.

CONTESTANTS' BOARD RAFFLE
All the names of the groms & menehune contestants will be
entered into a hat to win a special kid's Neptune board by Shawn
Rhodes of NorCal Surf Shop. Also, all the names of the women
contestants (other than the groms & menehune divisios) will
be entered in a hat to win one of the 4 raffle boards of their
choice. The remaining 3 board winners will be pulled from the
raffle ticket sales pool.

CONTEST PHOTOS

Elizabeth Pepin returns as our official Surf Fest photographer,
and we thank her for generously donating long hours to document
every surf heat possible. Contestants will be notified by email
that photos will be available for purchase online after the
event.
Elizabeth is a San Francisco resident who grew up at Ocean Beach
and can often be found surfing with her husband David and friends
in Santa Cruz, Pacifica, and north of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Elizabeth currently works as an Producer and Research &
Development Associate at KQED-TV in San Francisco. She has won
4 Emmys for her documentary work. Current projects include co-producing
a high definition documentary on the problems facing California's
coast which will air the week of November 12 on California PBS
stations, providing the principal surf photography for a women's
surf book to be released in 2005, and co-producing a half-hour
documentary, One Winter Story, with surfer/filmmaker Sally Lundburg
on big wave Mavericks surfer and scientist, Sarah Gerhardt to
be released in the winter of 2004.
For her women's surf photo project, Elizabeth has photographed
more than 400 women and girl surfers with both water cameras
and from the beach. Elizabeth's images have appeared in numerous
museums, galleries, newspapers and magazines, and in the only
book on the history of women's surfing, Girl in the Curl.
